Micro Bit Pedometer Fail

Micro Bit Pedometer Fail

A few weeks ago, my teacher introduced us so something called a micro bit with a coding website. Click here to access that website. I was pretty excited to learn about this new program. we started out simple by making a flashing heart on the LEDs. but then we made a thermometer and the next thing I knew, we were having lots of coding issues.

Last week my CSAI teacher told us that we needed to use are Micro bits to create a pedometer and next week, we would see whose step counter was the most accurate. As you know, On my welcome page I did not list coding as one of my hobbies. If it is not a hobby, that means I am definitely not good at it. Coding is NOT one of my strengths. This would mean quite a challenge for me.

I started with the basic code, following my teacher’s code but somewhere in the mist, I got lost. A the end of the lesson I thought I had got it. but turned out, I did not. At home, I decided to use the “ON SHAKE” block. This did not go well because I found it inconsistent. This is when I turned to a different, but vastly more complicated block “Acceleration”. This turned out to be a bad idea. I asked my brother to help and explain how to do the thing with x, y, and z thing. He did not really help and some articles I tried to read were all too confusing. With my scratchy information, I tried to “multiply? or add?” the x, y, and z things but obviously it did not work. In the end, I went back and reduced the code to what I had earlier. Click here to see my current code. I tried to make it more consistent by trying different locations to measure my steps. but it just could not be consistent. For example, I take ten steps with it on my leg and get 7. I do the exact same thing, and I get 1. This drove me CRAZY.

I know many people might of just said, hey why did you not just make some modifications? The thing is, I would of made a change if I knew what to change. Now many of you are probably wondering what happened on Tuesday? Well on that fateful day, I forgot to bring my Chromebook. (GASP) Yes I got a loner but I returned it before I went to the West campus. Bad move from me but, even if I had brought it, it did not have my code.

This landslide of unfortunate events and me simply just failing at coding seemes like a big mess. Well, IT WAS A BIG MESS! Over the weekend, I should of emailed my teacher for help. In the end, I did not come up with a very consistent Pedometer and that was my mostly fault.
